My Journey into the World of Vintage Treasures

If someone had told me as a child that one day I'd own a successful vintage business, I probably wouldn't have believed them. Looking back though, I realise my journey started much earlier than I ever imagined.

Growing up in the West Midlands, I spent many weekends following my parents around local charity shops, antique centres and car boot sales. While most children would have found it boring, I absolutely loved it. There was always a sense of excitement walking through the door, never knowing what hidden treasures might be waiting on the shelves.

My dad was a keen bargain hunter and had a real interest in collectibles. Whenever he found something unusual, he'd tell me what made it special and what he thought it might be worth. Without realising it, he was teaching me about value, rarity and the thrill of finding something that someone else had overlooked. Those moments sparked an interest that has stayed with me ever since.

A Passion for Business

Alongside my growing love of antiques, I developed another passion during secondary school – Business Studies.

I became fascinated by entrepreneurship, marketing and how successful businesses are built. That interest led me to study Marketing Management at the University of Wolverhampton, where I graduated with a BA (Hons) before completing my teacher training.

Today, I have the privilege of teaching Business and Enterprise to young people in the West Midlands, helping the next generation understand marketing, entrepreneurship and what it takes to build a successful business.

In many ways, Vintage By Thomas allows me to live both passions every single day.

The TV Programme That Changed Everything

Although I'd always enjoyed vintage items, there was one person who completely changed the way I looked at antiques.

Anita Manning.

Watching programmes such as Antiques Road Trip, Bargain Hunt and Dickinson's Real Deal opened my eyes to an entirely different world. Anita's enthusiasm was infectious. She had an incredible eye for quality, especially the smaller treasures that many people would simply walk past.

She showed that antiques aren't always about expensive furniture or grand paintings. Sometimes the most beautiful finds are a delicate brooch, a piece of fine china, a charming figurine or an unusual piece of costume jewellery.

Her passion inspired me to start researching the antiques market in much greater detail, and before long I discovered Etsy.

Turning a Passion into a Business

More than ten years ago, I opened Vintage By Thomas with one simple aim:

To rescue beautiful vintage treasures and help them find new homes where they'll be loved again.

What started as a hobby quickly became something much bigger.

Today, I've carefully sourced and sold thousands of vintage pieces to customers across the UK and around the world. Every item is individually selected because I genuinely love it—not because an algorithm tells me it's popular.

There's something incredibly rewarding about matching a treasured vintage piece with someone who has been searching for exactly that item.

Why I Love Royal Doulton

If you've browsed my shop, you'll know I have a particular soft spot for Royal Doulton.

The craftsmanship, attention to detail and history behind every figurine continues to amaze me. Whether it's one of the famous ladies, charming character figures or beautifully modelled animal studies, each piece tells its own story.

Many customers buy Royal Doulton because it reminds them of parents, grandparents or family collections they grew up with. Those memories make every piece even more meaningful.

My Love of Aynsley

Alongside Royal Doulton, I also have a real appreciation for Aynsley.

From the timeless elegance of Cottage Garden to beautifully decorated giftware and decorative vases, Aynsley has produced pieces that perfectly capture traditional English craftsmanship.

The delicate floral designs, exceptional quality and enduring charm make every piece a pleasure to source.

It's always exciting when I discover an unusual Aynsley item that deserves another opportunity to be displayed and appreciated.

Every Item Has a Story

One of my favourite parts of running Vintage By Thomas is hearing from customers after their purchase.

Sometimes an item reminds someone of a grandparent.

Sometimes it replaces a treasured piece that was accidentally broken.

Sometimes it's simply because they fell in love with something unique.

Those stories remind me that vintage isn't just about collecting—it's about preserving memories.
